David Brandler, BNET Chair, and Secretary, Elizabeth Dudley, visited the Temporary Library at the University Jos on Tuesday, July 4th 2017 to meet the University Librarian, Dr Stephen Akintunde, and to discuss BNET’s involvement in helping to replace and ship to Lagos journals and periodicals lost in a fire that completely destroyed the Old Library during the night on 08 October 2016.
Over 100,000 books and journals were destroyed in the fire but, with the help of academic institutions in the US, South Africa and the UK, Dr Akintunde has spearheaded and implemented the project, Beauty from Ashes, re-establishing the destroyed library.
We initially learnt about the fire from our own BNET Trustee, Professor Lalage Bown whose god daughter, Taiwo Oluwatomisin, is a lecturer in Library Studies at Jos University. In association with Dr John Kirkland, Director of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, BNET is assisting in the collating and shipping a replacement collection of British journals and manuscripts for the library. The shipping is being provided by BNET Member, Mr Jan Starren. More information about the fire and Beauty From Ashes can be found at www.unijosbeautyfromashes.blogspot.com.ng
Following a tour of the Temporary Library, based in the Science Library, we were given a tour of the old library, to see first hand the devastation and destruction of the library as a result of the fire.
